Yes, In My Backyard!

Updated: Nov 27, 2023

Today is as good a day as any to find space in your yard or garden or somewhere around your apartment complex to put in a clothesline. Not everyone has the space, or freedom from an HOA, but if you do, it will be cheaper, quieter and greener to start to start hanging your clothes up outside. You can string up a line or dig in an umbrella drier. The few minutes it takes to hang and take down your fresh-smelling clothes will get you outside and in the fresh air, too.

Here are some figures from The Guardian webpage on carbon footprint of cleaning our clothes:

--0.7 kg CO2e washed at 40°C, dried on the line

There also was a group that promoted the "right to dry" called LaundryList.org which seems defunct, but it shows us that this practice is an important personal act that can support the environment and community.
